I had been wanting to do a night shoot for years, so was thrilled to get the opportunity to showcase K2 New Zealand rider and friend Timo Fitzpatrick.

Like most photographers and DOPs, I am constantly pushing myself to use and shape light with intention. Whilst this of course creats a more pleasing image it also shapes mood and narrative.

I started my career as a professional photographer in the Bristol nightclub scene whilst I was at university there. One of the defining characteristics of my work was the way I use flash, often with low shutter speeds. I have since taken elements of this style into my work today in the snow.

For this first shot of Timo, I strapped a flash to his leg to illimunite the snow cloud he put up and reflect back at him. I think that comparing it to the second shot here really demonstrates the difference light can make.
